Gearing up for the challenge: Registration day

Today, Cape Town saw hundreds of cyclists descend onto the V&A Waterfront to collect their registration kits ahead of this year’s Absa Cape Epic. The excitement was palpable as #SasolEpicWomen from across the world prepare for the race’s prologue tomorrow morning in Meerendal.

While some riders will be competing in the Epic again this year, others will be attempting the world renowned stage race for the first time. For Chilean team Eliza “Chichi” Garcia and Florencia Marinovic, this will be their first Cape Epic. The team recently won the Breck Epic in Colorado and are ready for another challenge.

Mother, teacher, and multi-award winning cycling champion, Chichi uses her notable experience to mentor Florencia, who is comparatively new to the sport. Florencia began her sporting career as a professional skier and, when not on the back of her bike, spends her time studying towards her law degree. The team can’t wait to begin the race and to take in the breathtaking natural beauty along the route.

With this year being a climbing route, consistent, rigorous training has been an absolute must for all riders. Team Passion and Pain from Durban noted Stage 2 and Stage 5 as the stages they are most concerned about, but all in all, the team are excited about the challenge that lies ahead.

Speaking to a few more of the competitors, it was clear that apart from the physical challenge, a massive draw card of the race was the sense of comradery felt amongst the female riders. They all share a passion and love for the sport and see the Cape Epic as a fantastic opportunity to meet and compete alongside like-minded women.
