Sasol League National Championship Match Day 2 - Round Up

Day two of the annual Sasol League National Championship proved to be a cracker with seven goals scored in the first two fixtures of the day.

Als Puk Tawana (North West) which played their second match of the tournament hosted Galeshewe Ladies FC (Northern Cape) on Field A. Following a loss in their opening match a win in this fixture was crucial to secure a chance of going further in the tournament.

After missing vital goals in the first stanza of the match Shuneez van Heerden from Als Puk Tawana opened the scoring for her team in the 24th minute. This gave the team the opportunity to settle down and take control of the match leading into the half time break. 

The second half proved to be smooth sailing for the North West based team as they netted a further five goals through hatrick hero Emily Molapo, Selina Schalkwyk, Matsatsi Ramaila to secure a 6-0 victory over their Northern Cape opposition.

In the other match on Field B, defending champions Cape Town Roses FC (Western Cape) took on tournament hosts, Free State’s winner, Bloemfontein Celtic Ladies. It was the Cape Town based outfit who came out stronger of the two teams in the first half. They were rewarded with two quick goals from set-pieces in the fourth and eighth minute of the first half as a result of the pressure that was applied on their opponents. Both goals were converted by Sisanda Vukapi and Lelona Daweti respectively to ensure a 2-0 victory for Cape Town Roses and qualification into the knockout stages of the tournament.

“I think we were the stronger team” said Cape Town Roses FC Coach Xolile Madikane. Now that we have made it to the knockout stage of the tournament, and have a rest day ahead, I think the spectators will see a different Cape Town Roses on Friday.” expressed the joyful coach.

As the third and final match of the day kicked off at 16h30 between Coal City Wizards (Mpumalanga) versus Durban Ladies FC (KwaZulu-Natal), the coastal team opened the scoring going into a 1-0 lead at the time review went to press.
