Amawheelies battled against Tournament Favourites

Sunday, 11 June 2017

Day 4 of U23 World Wheelchair Basketball Championship continued Sunday, 11 June and the opening match of the day in a warm and sunny Toronto, saw Sasol Amawheelies face what promised to be an exercise in damage limitation as they faced the tournament favourites, Great Britain at the Mattamy Athletic Centre.

The British Men’s U23 National Team has previously battled to fourth place finishes at the past three world championships for junior men, including in 2005 on home soil in Birmingham, Great Britain. With consecutive finishes falling just shy of a medal, Great Britain is in search of its first podium finish at the world championship and is looking to challenge in this year’s championship.

It is for this very reason that Coach Allan Maltase’s chargers were expecting an onslaught form the British youngsters, who were looking to secure their place in the quarter finals and that is exactly what they got! Great Britain, having lost an early game in the pool to Japan, due to a Technical error, by the table officials, needed to beat South Africa convincingly to boost their Goal Difference and ensure their passage through - should other results not go their way.

South African Captain Musawenkosi Dlamini, Simangaye Shabalala and Warren Tefu were the only three players to trouble the scorekeepers - with Dlamini top scoring for the youngsters from Mzansi with 10 points, as the British imposed a record defeat on the Amawheelies running out 119-23 victors.

Coach Mtatase, was visibly frustrated with his team as they appeared lack luster on court and let themselves down once again and turnovers, weak defence and an unacceptable field goal percentage of 21% contributing to their down fall once again. Next up for the Amawheelies, is yet another tough match up, against the USA at 12:00 (18:00 CAT).
